Outsourcing is definitely a hot issue today. With some economists saying that outsourcing is generally bad for the economy to others who are saying this is good not just for the short term but the long term as well, it is hard for most people to form an opinion without first knowing the facts.

Outsourcing is a business practice long used by some institutions to cut costs by taking advantage of currency value differences among different countries, channel core competencies of a company by only retaining the key elements to run the business successfully and take advantage of the surplus in intellectual labor in other countries.

When companies outsource email correspondence or avail of call center outsourcing for example, they are able to take advantage of the lower costs of labor in other countries thus reducing their overall operating cost. This directly translates as a benefit for their customers because a lower operating cost means that companies can charge lower for their products of services. Contrary to what some people might say, quality of service does not necessarily have to suffer as the companies doing the outsourcing have it within their power to cancel the outsourcing contract if customers are generally not satisfied.

Some drawbacks to the companies’ decision to outsource email correspondence or outsource software development are the security issues of the data being transferred over the medium and the threat to local employment. This became obvious when credit card theft and credit card fraud increased with the advent of call center outsourcing.

This does not mean however that outsourcing as a business option is generally bad, it just means that an outsourcing center just has to apply more stringent measures to prevent sensitive data from being accessed or stolen. On the other hand, local people are also claiming that outsource printing, outsource email correspondence and the likes represents a threat to their job security. Some economists say that while this is indeed true not all of the blame could be attributed to an outsourcing center because anything that increases economic efficiency will always make someone lose a job. Take the case of advanced robotics and automated machines for example which displaced a lot of workers. Moreover, local businesses and people also benefit from outsourcing contracts from other countries as well.
