Anti static packaging came about as a solution to the handling and shipping of computer electronic parts and components. Because these computer parts are highly sensitive and delicate, they need to be protected against various hazards that go with assembly, handling, and package shipping.

ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE

Of particular importance is the need to shield these computer parts and circuits form electrostatic discharge which can totally ruin them. Electronic discharge is an abrupt and sudden release of electrical current as electrons find affinity for a more positively-charged material and move towards them. Such discharges can occur any time. Most times they can cause static electricity and cause appliances to malfunction. But if the voltages of these discharges are high, they can be strong enough to harm humans.

Because of their very nature, electronic parts are prone to electrical discharges and they are likely to be broken when this happens. Imagine the cost for the manufacturers if a solution cannot be found – imagine how expensive it would have been for the industry if the problem of electrical discharge persisted.

THE SIMPLE SOLUTION

Of course, a billion-dollar industry will influence science in its favor. Of course the solution was something we have been using for a long time already – anti static insulation. Anti static computer package was the answer. Anti static packaging is a type of packaging material that discourages or obstructs electrical current. These computer packages are made of materials that are insulators – they block the flow of electrons and thus stop the potential damage even before it takes place.

Anti static packaging is usually made of plastic. They also come as blister packages to insulate the components from shock and vibration as well. Because of anti static packaging, computers and computer parts are handled and shipped to all parts of the world and have significantly brought the costs of computer production down.

So of you have a chance, look at package labels – you just might be holding am anti static. And for all we know, anti static packaging may have been the reason why we all can afford computers.
