For those who love to travel water filtering kits in portable packs can be convenient accessories. With a simple travel water filter you won't have to drink tap water while away from home. But if you are out camping or you're traveling to a foreign country where the water may not be safe, then travel water filters can become life-preserving equipment.
For decades, travelers have used mechanical filters like ceramic water filters. It has pores tiny enough (usually given as 0.2 microns) to prevent bacteria from getting through. In addition, a silver compound is integrated with the ceramic medium, which helps prevent bacterial growth from extending into the pores of the ceramic and renders inactive any viruses in the water. One nice feature of ceramic water filters is that you can scrub the surface of the ceramic periodically and its filter elements last longer.
A newer type of travel water filter uses a micro-filter to trap cysts and parasites, plus chemical action from an iodine resin medium. Iodine, which is a powerful disinfectant, contacts with the water and instantly kills microorganisms and viruses; it does not enter the water, however, because it is tightly bonded to the resin.
An iodine resin filter must be replaced after a certain quantity of water has been treated, while the ceramic filter can be used indefinitely. This becomes important if you're in a remote area for an extended time and can't get replacement filters. On the other hand, the iodine resin filter has a more powerful disinfecting action. However, both of these travel water filters do provide safe drinking water from untreated sources.
If you're trekking in North American wilderness areas, ceramic water filters may suffice since there is less risk of viruses being present in the water. However, iodine resin filters with their antiviral action may increase your sense of security.
