Dial up Internet refers to an online service that connects a computer to a network using a modem and letting this connection pass through a public switched telephone network (PSTN). PSTN is an analog connection used to connect landline telephones. Dial up Internet is also known by other names such as dial-up Internet service, dial-up access service, remote access service, and narrowband. Dial up Internet is called narrowband as opposed to broadband, a newer and faster Internet connection service that surpasses the services derived from a dial-up Internet connection.

Dial up providers permit data to be transmitted between 56,000 bits per second to 100,000 bits per second. Dial up service providers, while offering their services to be paid later or post-paid, also offer cheap dial up Internet access by making pre-paid service available, and often introduce Internet access cards in the market for this purpose.

However, because dial up Internet access uses analog landlines, it often takes more time to get connected. Connections are often stalled, prompting users to request, time and again, to be reconnected to the Internet. Moreover, data transfers always take more time to be sent or received via dial up connection.

More recently, broadband technology offers a better alternative to dial up Internet access. Broadband has been gaining more popularity worldwide, especially for doing business. The current wider acceptance of this technology is primarily due to better Internet access and connections, as well as cheaper price of the service. Data transmission rates via broadband go beyond 200,000 bits per second, which is more than double the speed that can be best offered by dial-up Internet service providers.

More than just allowing for clearer and faster Internet connections, broadband allows users to utilize Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP). VOIP is a technology that allows audio data to be transmitted via the Internet.

Broadband services are offered via many avenues, such as digital subscriber line (DSL), cable modem, wireless phones, fiber, wireless, and satellite.
