People that suffer from diabetes have a high level of glucose in the body. Glucose is one of the main ingredients needed for your body to produce energy. The other ingredient that assists in making you energetic is the hormone called insulin. The insulin that is stored in your pancreas need to enter your liver, so that body energy can be produced. If there is a lack of insulin in the body, glucose cannot be converted into energy. As a result, the level of your glucose in your blood increases and causes the condition called diabetes.
People who are diagnosed with diabetes need to be placed on a strict diet. Diets for diabetics involve the intake of certain amounts of nutrients daily. Individuals suffering from any form of diabetes will be told to reduce the intake of fats and carbohydrates. An increase in protein intake and consumption of plenty of vegetables and fruits should be included in diets for diabetics. You will also be told to eat fewer chips, but more of crackers, chicken (with the fat taken out), fish and meat. Any processed foods and fruit juices will be taken in moderate levels. With diets for diabetics, the amount of phosphorus, potassium and sodium in the food you eat will also need to be kept under control. The consumption of wholegrain pasta, brown rice and bread is encouraged. Only low fat cheese, milk, yogurt and salad dressings will be permitted in your diet.
Diabetic patients will need to see a doctor or nutritionist before starting any diabetic diet. This is so that the correct calculation of meal sizes and meal frequency can be prescribed. It is likely that diabetic patients will experience an increase in glucose levels if the prescribed diet is not followed. Some diabetic menus and recipes are found in the American Diabetes Foundation website, and in the Diabetic Cooking Magazine.
