Today, more and more people are switching from dial up service to broadband or cable internet. However, for the individual who doesn’t really need to be online 24/7, internet dial up services are still best net-surfing solution.

A dial up service refers to the internet connection utilizing a device (such as a land line or telephone) and a modem in order to log on to a network. It makes use of telephone lines in order to access the internet. Aside from the modem, a communication software is also needed so that the local PC may be connected to the internet. Usually, your computers are already installed with this software. But you can always consult with your internet service provider and ask them that the same software be installed in your computer. Accessing the world wide web through a dial up service will include calling a service provider, hence the term “Dial up.” You need to dial the service numbers through your computer so that you can be logged on. After all, this type of service makes use of your ordinary telephone lines.

This puts the connection at a bit of a disadvantage, quality-wise. As can be expected, although there are many high speed dial up internet service providers, they are still not as fast as the broadband or cable connections.

Data rates are also limited for a dial up service. Traditionally, the data rates for dial up access is 56,000 bits or 56 kilobytes per second. Hence, dial up service is not recommended for those who wish to stay online for long hours for purposes of downloading, extended chatting, and data uploading.

What’s good about a dial up service though is that even if it’s a bit slow, it’s still reliable and it’s rather cheap! If you’re simply into emails, reading, researching, and posting a few messages here and there, a dial up service just might work for you. For as low as five to ten dollars a month, you can have unlimited dial up internet service. And this offer even comes with bonus services such as webhosting and email services. All in all, these aren’t bad deals.
