Paternity test costs will depend on the type of paternity test that is to be performed, the reason for the paternity test (a paternity test used for court proceedings will cost more) and the type of analysis that is required. Most DNA testing centers can offer a payment scheme, but will only release your results after the full payment is received.

A paternity test can be performed in a blood bank, a DNA testing center or laboratory, or by making use of DNA test kits. There are different ways that paternity tests can be performed. It takes a certain number of weeks before the results of a paternity test are released.

The tests that are done after a child is born can include: collecting a blood sample from the potential father, scraping the walls of the father’s cheek, testing the child’s umbilical cord, and taking samples of the father’s tissues, semen or hair.

A different set of paternity tests are performed before a child's birth, and can include an amniocentesis wherein a small amount of amniotic fluid is taken from the mother of the child during a certain stage of the pregnancy. This method is not recommended, as it can lead to miscarriage and cause the child to have certain birth defects. The mother may also suffer from abnormal vaginal bleeding, stomach cramping and a leak in the baby’s amniotic sac. The DNA that is obtained from the amniotic fluid is then compared to certain DNA samples extracted from the potential father to compare if both DNA samples match.

Chronic Villi Sampling, also known as CVS is another form of paternity testing that can be done prior to a child's birth. Sample tissues from the woman’s cervix are collected and compared against the DNA of both parents.

If you decide to undergo paternity testing, it is best that you shop around for different testing laboratories, and compare the different paternity test costs before you make your final decision. DNA paternity test costs vary from one laboratory to another, and costs more when testing is performed after a child is born.
