Artificial grass is also referred to as artificial turf. They are used mostly for sports that were initially played on real grass like American football, baseball, soccer, and tennis.

REAL IS EXPENSIVE

Artificial grass or synthetic grass came about because the cost of maintaining real grass became more and more prohibitive given the high traffic and constant abuse that it was exposed to. Imagine having to cut and mow and water real grass on a daily basis – it is not only expensive but very tedious as well. Grass is also prone to seasonal changes and prior to the introduction of artificial turf grass, not a few sporting events have been cancelled because of frozen or wet grass.

Most artificial grass is made from synthetic fibers. They are much more like a carpet in as much as they should be cleaned and kept on a regular basis but they are not high-maintenance as much as real grass is.

Before evolving into their latest form which is practically impossible to tell apart from real grass, the very first types of artificial grass were not very successful. Complaints about the surface were abundant and sport stadiums that initially used them went back to using the real thing and still continue to use it.

BACK TO STAY

Most of the complaints were about the hard underfoot which were hard on the back and caused frequent injuries. It failed to capture the natural shock-absorbing qualities of natural grass. Another common issue early on was that artificial turf installation which was very difficult and cumbersome.

However, advances in technological applications have drastically improved artificial grass, so much so that they are almost like the real thing. The ever-growing acceptance of the modern artificial grass has already signaled their comeback. Now it is only a matter of time before we know if they are back for good.
