Located on the Strip of Las Vegas, Nevada the Luxor Hotel and Casino can be considered a pioneer in fully themed mega resorts. Construction of the Luxor began in 1991 by the Mandalay Resort Group, and on October 15, 1993, the resort hotel and casino was launched.

The Luxor Hotel and Casino is easily accessible, situated only about 4 miles away from the McCarran International Airport. There are trams and moving walkways that connect the hotel to two other hotels, the Excalibur Hotel and Casino and to the Mandalay Bay Beach Resort, also built by the Mandalay Resort Group. At present, however, the Mandalay Resort Group -- and therefore all three hotels -- belongs to MGM Mirage.

Another hotel owned by MGM Mirage is the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. Also located on the strip, the Bellagio takes on a Meditteranean theme with its main attraction being the Fountains of Bellagio. These fountains are based on a man-made lake that covers about 8 acres. The Bellagio Hotel in Vegas, like the Luxor, also has its own casino.

Covering 47 acres, the Luxor Hotel and Casino takes on an Ancient Egyptian theme, the focal point being a 30-story pyramid made out of black glass. The hotel and casino consists of more than 4,400 rooms that line the inner walls of the pyramid. In turn, these rooms face an atrium that is known to be the biggest of its kind in the world. On the apex of the pyramid is a spotlight that is beamed directly towards the sky. The light of this beam is so powerful that it can actually be seen by passengers flying over Los Angeles, California. Flanking the pyramid is an obelisk with the hotel’s name, and an exact replica of the Great Sphinx of Giza.

The obvious main attraction of the hotel is its casino, which includes several attractions like Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, Pai Go, slot machines and poker rooms. And if the casino isn’t enough, also located inside the pyramid, for everyone’s entertainment and pleasure, are the King Tut Museum, the Oasis Spa, the RA nightclub, the Pharaoh’s theatre and an IMAX theatre. For shopping needs, there are several stores that line the Giza Galleria; for the famished and parched, there are several restaurants and café’s that can be visited.
