In the winter when you turn on the heating indoors to keep warm, the relative humidity falls to low levels. The dryness irritates your throat and nasal passages, and roughens your skin. You need to reach between 30 percent to 50 percent relative humidity indoors to be comfortable, says a consumer safety commission.

If your home feels uncomfortably dry in winter, you use portable humidifiers to add moisture to the air. In hot, humid weather, you use portable dehumidifiers to reduce moisture.

You’ll find four basic types of humidifiers: vaporizer and warm mist, which both heat water to boiling point and disperse water (by different methods) into the air as steam; cool mist, which creates a cool mist of water by high speed rotating disks or ultrasonic vibrations; and evaporative, which transmits moisture into the air by blowing the air through a moistened absorbent material such as a wick. Bemis humidifiers are of the evaporative type.

The vaporizer and warm mist types do not disperse minerals into the air but you run the risk of burns from boiling water. The cool mist types, being without filters and not undergoing evaporation, spray out minerals as white dust and microorganisms.

The evaporative types, like the Bemis humidifier, also do not scatter substantial amounts of minerals and are not likely to contaminate the air if you keep the filters clean. But the problem is, evaporative types are hard to clean.

You can get Bemis humidifier in several models of different reservoir capacity. These are freestanding units put in hallways. Like all humidifiers, these do not use real wood, because proximity to the water reservoir causes wood to warp and split.

A tabletop Bemis humidifier is available in combination with an air purifier, to remove pollen, dust and smoke from the air. This gives you the advantage of having both moist and purified air.
