Paternity testing is the most reliable process of determining whether you are a child’s biological father. Since people decide to undergo paternity tests for various and unique reasons, there are several paternity testing options you can choose from depending on what is most suitable to your situation.

A child’s paternity can be determined even before the child is born. A qualified obstetrician-gynecologist can take samples for prenatal testing. In cases where the alleged father is deceased on the other hand, a preserved sample from the coroner’s office can be used to provide the necessary DNA for a viability test.

Should a legally defensible result is not necessary, you can opt to get paternity test kits where you can collect your own samples and perform the test in the privacy of your home.

A paternity test needs to meet three requirements to be recognized legally. First, a neutral third party must collect the sample used. Second, the tested person should be positively identified through valid government-issued IDs, photographs, and fingerprints. Lastly, the samples must be carefully tracked to every test participant during the entire testing process.

Standard paternity testing calls for three parties – a child, the mother, and the alleged father. The mother’s DNA eliminates half of the child’s DNA making it easier to compare the alleged father’s DNA to the child.

However, paternity testing is also possible without the mother’s participation although the process calls for additional analysis. Motherless paternity tests are nonetheless reliable and guarantee 99.9% test result accuracy.

DNA paternity tests do not come cheap. A paternity test costs a few hundred dollars but can go up to as much as a thousand bucks depending on the complexity of analyses necessary. Paternity test kits are much cheaper and can be purchased for as low as a hundred bucks.

It is imperative that the paternity testing clinic you choose is licensed and certified to make sure that you get accurate and reliable test results.
