Asbestos was used widely in the past partly because of its fire-resistance quality and its ability to protect against damage, including corrosion. Asbestos was extensively present in production plants of various trade and industries, including construction/building and automotive. However, the use of the substance was regulated, if not banned, because asbestos exposure can cause severe illnesses. Serious asbestos diseases usually affect the lungs because the inhalation of certain amount of airborne asbestos dust is dangerous. Thus, not only people who are exposed to airborne asbestos filters at work are at high risk, but also those who live near the place where the substance was used. Asbestos-related diseases may also develop years after asbestos exposure. Due to the severity of the diseases caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos, a number of people who came in contact with the substance have filed asbestos claims.

Objectives for filing asbestos claims

Asbestos claims are aimed at seeking monetary compensation for people who developed serious illnesses, including lung cancer, pleural thickening, and pleural plaques, mesothelioma and asbestosis, partly because of asbestos exposure. A number of those who made asbestos claims are seeking recompense for mental anguish, lost wages and medical bills. Asbestos claims are also aimed at increasing awareness of the ill-effects of asbestos. Public awareness of asbestos diseases has grown in recent years because of the media exposure of some asbestos claims. Who can file an asbestos claim?

People who contacted asbestos-related illnesses because of work, or their loved ones, can file for asbestos claim. Most asbestos lawsuits are against the group responsible for the exposure of the substance, usually employers and producers. However, in some states, anybody who is expecting to develop an asbestos-related disease could file an asbestos claim.
