Being a new mother can be very stressful, frustrating and exhausting.

Exercise after pregnancy helps promote well being, aids in easing postpartum blues and gives you the boost of energy you need when you lack sleep. Exercise after pregnancy increases your endurance and strength, so that you are able to carry your baby for long periods of time.

Starting exercise after pregnancy could result in injury if you start your routine too soon after having given birth. It is recommended that you check with your doctor on when you can start your routine. You should start gradually when doing repetitions in exercises, and slowly increase the intensity when your body has gotten used to the routine.

There are many forms of exercises that one can do:

Abdominal crunches can be performed to help flatten your upper and lower abdominal area. To perform crunches, lie with your back and feet flat on the floor, keeping your feet flat apart as wide as your hips. Place your hands clasped behind your neck. Lift your head, neck and shoulders up slowly towards your knees. Hold on to that position for a few seconds, while you tighten your abdominal muscles. Slowly return your head, neck and shoulders to its original position.

Make sure you are not using your hands to pull your neck towards your knees when you lift your head. Your middle and lower back should remain on the floor while you lift yourself up. Your chin should be pointing up towards the ceiling and not be too close in contact with your chest.

Kegel exercises are done to strengthen your pelvic floor and to aid in the healing of your episiotomy. The next time you urinate, try holding your urine for ten seconds and release slowly. You can aim for 20-25 repetitions on this. Once you know how to hold the contraction, you can perform this type of exercise anytime and anywhere.

Aerobic or speed walking can help you shed off those extra pounds by sweating it off. Walking also tones your legs and gets fresh air into your system. It is also a good reason for bonding with your baby by taking them for a walk while you exercise.

Whatever exercises you do after pregnancy, always remember to drink plenty of fluids, stick to a healthy diet and do not overdo it to the point of exhaustion.
