Florida car insurance law makes it mandatory for you to carry a personal injury protection and property damage liability if you are motor vehicle owner in Florida. You are also required to carry these coverages even if you are only a seasonal resident in Florida provided you live at least ninety days in the state.
Personal Injury Protection
Personal injury protection (also known as no-fault coverage) covers damages – including necessary medical expenses, lost earnings, replacement services and death benefits – that you suffer due to a car accident.
The personal injury protection will cover you, your family members (who may not own cars), passengers who often ride with you, and licensed drivers (listed in your policy). The coverage applies if they are involved in an accident within the state while driving your car with your consent.
This coverage extends its protection even if you are in another person’s vehicle or if as a pedestrian you suffer injury resulting from a vehicular accident. You can also make a claim from your Florida auto insurance company under this coverage although the accident happens to you outside Florida, provided it is within the country.
Property Damage Liability
Property damage liability covers damage arising from an accident that you or anyone covered under your Florida car insurance policy may cause to another person’s property. This coverage also applies although you drive an automobile owned by another person.
If you want to get more protection, you can buy Florida car insurance higher than the state’s required minimum. Bodily injury liability, collision, comprehensive and medical payments are some optional coverages that you may purchase from a Florida auto insurance company.
Although auto insurance in Florida may be costly, getting at least the minimum coverages can make a big difference in case a car accident may occur.
