LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis. In layman's terms it means vision correction laser surgery. It accurately reshapes the eye's cornea without damaging the surrounding cell layers. If you are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism then a LASIK eye center may be the right place for you to go.
In a nutshell, some of the advantages of LASIK include:
1- Minimum scarring
2- Improved visual clarity
3- Post-operative discomfort is slight
4- Rapid recovery
5- In most cases the need for glasses or contact lenses is decreased or eliminated
6- For patients with high levels of nearsightedness, a key advantage is a long term better stability of vision.
LASIK seems promising. But like any surgical procedure there are some risks involved. Though complications are rare, it is important to consult with a competent and experienced surgeon who will give you a thorough diagnosis. Here are some possible risks or side effects to consider:
1- Dry Eye syndrome may develop
2- Incapacitating visual symptoms may also develop
3- At worst, a possible loss of vision
4- If you are farsighted, the improved vision experienced after surgery is not guaranteed to be permanent
5- Post-surgery, you may still need to undergo additional treatment or use reading glasses
6- Long-term effects of LASIK are not yet known.
There are other types of procedures similar to LASIK. The new LASIK procedures are: LASEK (laser epithelial Keratomileusis) and Epi-Lasek.
LASEK is relatively new. It was developed to reduce possible complications that occur after LASIK. Surgeons normally recommend it to patients who are not good LASIK candidates.
Meanwhile Epi-LASIK was developed to counter some of the likely troubles experienced with LASIK and LASEK. In fact it is more commonly described as a cross between the two. This new LASIK procedure is best for those whose profession or lifestyle carries a high risk of getting hit on the face or in the eye - such as police officers, soldiers, and athletes to name some.
New LASIK and eye surgery centers are popping up all over the country. They have grown in demand and popularity from coast-to-coast. Some San Diego LASIK eye centers may offer alternatives. Some do not use lasers, while others offer variations of LASIK that address presbyopia (the inability of the eye to focus at all distances). There are numerous New York LASIK eye centers too. In Manhattan alone, it should not be difficult to find a fully certified LASIK surgeon.
Remember before going to a LASIK eye center find out whether or not you really do need the surgery. Your doctor should determine if you are a good candidate. Discuss your options. With realistic expectations and proper guidance, you’ll be able to make informed decisions.
