VOLUNTARY MEMBERSHIP
There are many ways of defining mailing lists, depending on where you are coming from. If you have a company or an organization, you may have mailing lists of people who have signified their desire to receive regular updates and news from your company.
Often, the members of these mailing lists have voluntarily signed up for your notification service. Most online sites have mailing lists of those who have signed-up as a member of their site, and have agreed to be a part of the mailing lists of the sites that have topics that they are interested in. The good thing about these mailing lists is that you can always opt to sign out of the service and stop receiving emails and e-newsletters from them.
Another type of mailing lists is the one that people in sales are more concerned with. Have you ever asked yourself how in the world do you receive unsolicited mail from the post man? It is because companies buy mailing lists so that they can send letters and flyers to more people and hopefully, turn some of those into actual sales.
MAIL LEADS
When sales people buy mailing lists, they are actually investing on leads that they can hopefully convert into clients. For some companies, sending mail is better because they can send all the information that their potential client may want to know, add to this the fact that mails are less intrusive. There are actually people who like to read flyers and brochures and other forms of unsolicited mail because it can be informative and interesting as well.
Most of us have joined mailing lists, whether we are aware of it or not. Whenever we sign up for anything on the web, or provide our information to anyone, we are inadvertently leaving ourselves open people who want our business.
