Choosing Your Keywords
The object of search engine optimisation (or SEO) is to improve your site so that it gets higher rankings on domain name search engines. Higher rankings from such search engines usually means higher traffic. People tend to choose the sites that appear first. If you have ever used a domain name search engine to look up a certain topic, chances are that you chose to go a highly-ranked website.
Obviously, search engine advertising and search engine marketing are crucial parts of your web-based business. If you can’t be found on a search engine, how will anyone find your site? You may have something to offer to the market, but until the world knows that you are in business, you will have no business.
In order to ensure that you get the site traffic you deserve, you will have to engage yourself in the process of search engine optimisation.
One of the most important things you can do to optimize your website is to use the right keywords of keyword phrases. Choosing the wrong keywords will place you at a disadvantage; search engines will probably have a hard time picking up on your site.
So how can you choose the right keywords? Well, here are a few pointers to get you started. Remember that each page of your site should be optimized as much as possible. Apply these tips wherever and whenever appropriate.
Be specific. This gives you a better chance of finding the right customer. If your keywords or keyword phrases are too general in nature, you will not fare well with the search engines. If you use specific keywords, higher rankings are almost assured. Why? There is less competition when you do. For example, instead of saying "cars", you can say "imported Japanese cars", or "Japanese-made SUV’s." Instead of saying "exercise machine", you can say "200 lb. bench press machine." You want to fill a niche market and reach a niche audience.
Think like your customers. Get into their minds, so to speak. What keywords or keyword phrases would they use to search for you and your product? Brainstorm on all the possibilities here.
Study the competition. Perform a search utilizing keywords you want to use. When the results come up, visit the top sites. Once there you can view the source HTML code of the page and look at the keywords they’re using in their meta tags. (To do this, click on the “View” tab at the upper portion of your browser; then click on “Source” or “Page Source.”) A friendly reminder: Do not copy indiscriminately. The product or service you offer might have nuances not captured by your competitor.
If you've having a hard time with the search engine optimisation process, you might consider using search engine submission services and/or search engine submission tools. They might be able to provide the expertise needed to complete the task.
