Preventing Static Electricity Through Antistatic Devices

Static electricity is produced when atoms containing an equal amount of protons, electrons and neutrons rub against each other. The action of rubbing against each other causes friction and the transformation from one type of atom to another. For example, a proton can transform into an electron, a neutron into a proton, and so on. It is the action of this transformation that produces an electrical discharge called static electricity.

Static electricity can occur in a number of situations (sometimes, walking on a carpeted floor is one way to create static electricity). Static electricity can be fatal to the life of certain computer equipment, hearing aids, cellular phones and other electronic devices. In some cases, when so much static electricity is found in an electrical device it explodes or causes a fire. In rare cases, people have known to have died from prolonged exposure to static electricity.

Antistatic devices can be bought to control static. There are different kinds of antistatic devices that are available in the market that can be used depending on equipment.

Antistatic mats, which are made from steel fibers or vinyl, are available in a variety of sizes and colors. Antistatic mats are manufactured as floor mats, computer chair mats, table top mats and many more. Antistatic mats are also available in smaller sizes to accommodate a computer mouse or keyboard.

Antistatic wrist straps are worn around your wrist or ankle. Antistatic straps have a piece of grounding wire attached to the strap that controls static.

There are also antistatic bags that are commonly used to store PC cards or computer peripherals. Antistatic bags either have a coated surface or small filaments throughout the bag that prevent static electricity.

Other forms of antistatic devices or antistatic eliminators include sprays, ionizers and direct current bars.
