The Need to Control Your Gas Bills

Like telephone bills, gas bills vary depending on area covered and provider. The amount that you pay each month depends on your usage rate.

You use gas for most of your household chores - cooking, drying your laundry, and heating your home. Hence it is important for you to find ways to lower your bills for gas usage.

Gas Bill Saving Tips

Before you even move into your home, you should already find out who are the providers for gas as well as other utilities. Compare them not just for their rates, but also service quality.

Examine your gas bills to make sure you understand the breakdown of the charges and the reasons. If there is anything you are not clear about regarding your bill, you should clarify it with the gas company.

At home, plan your cooking procedures carefully so that you don't take too much time in warming your oven or your stove. Use fresh tender meats so that they will easily get cooked and thus save gas. Adjust the heat to low when the soup or stew you are cooking is already boiling. Allow frozen foods to thaw inside your refrigerator for a few hours, instead of cooking them straight from the freezer. Avoid opening your oven door too often while baking as this releases large amounts of wasted gas heat.

Avoid overloading or under-loading your clothes dryer. Allow the clothes to move freely inside so that they will dry faster and shorten drying time. Adjust the temperature from time to time as clothes start getting dry. It may also be a good idea to dry thin or delicate clothes outdoors especially on a sunny or windy day rather than to use the dryer.

Unless you are in an extremely cold area or stay home most of the day, you don't need to use your heater all the time. Turn off the heater when you leave for work, or use an automatic timer to preset the heating times.

Have the gas company check and clean your heater and thermostat regularly to get maximum heating efficiency, since dirty or defective heaters will only waste more gas.
