A clocking machine is a time-keeping system that captures and records an employee’s clocking in and out on a daily basis. Aside from capturing time, a modern clocking machine also tallies automatically the total number of hours a worker has spent on the floor. This in turn is integrated with payroll programs to compute an employee’s salary every pay day.

RELIABLE BUT NOT VERIFIABLE

Clocking systems have gone a long way since the days of the good old Bundy clock. Back then, employees use a time card which is inserted into a slot inside the clocking machine. The time of clocking in and out is then stamped onto the card.

While the Bundy was a reliable clocking machine, the problem with this system was that it was not accurate in the sense that anybody could swipe for someone else’s time card without the clocking machine being able to make a distinction. There have been a lot of cases where a friend will swipe another worker’s card to make it seem like he reported for work when in fact he did not.

The old clocking systems were costing businesses a lot of money because they were paying for salaries that cannot be verified. There was no way of knowing for sure whether your employees did log in as much time as was stamped on their time cards.

FUSING MODERN WITH OLD KNOWLEDGE

The modern clocking machine is a stroke of genius because it is a seamless fusion of technology with a simple, age-old scientific fact. The modern clocking systems are called biometric clocking systems. A biometric clocking machine has a finger or eye scanner instead of a card slot. When the system scans your prints, it will then make a record of the time you have clocked in and out of work. This record is collated by a central program which tallies and computes your total working hours and corresponding salary.

Because a biometric clocking machine captures prints that are unique to every person, no one can scan in and out for somebody else. This system makes sure that every employee receives his just dues.
