As much as moving international is exciting, it can also be daunting. Problems will sure arise if you do not plan well and choose the perfect people to help you. Here are a few suggestions to help you from packing to choosing among international movers.

Packing

First, decide on whether to let an international moving company do all the packing for you or not. It is definitely your call if you want to pack some or all of your belongings. Remember, though, that you will be moving overseas and not a few blocks away. You may save more by doing the packing yourself but be warned that movers will not be liable if any damage happens to the stuff you packed yourself.

Whether or not you decide to let the movers do all or some of the packing for you, be sure to prepare a box where you can put all the needed packing materials such as packaging tape, scissors, and marking pens. Also, have a handy notebook ready, where you can list down every box packed and all the belongings placed inside it. Be sure to label each box with categories like CLOTHES, PLATES or TOYS. To save yourself and the movers from the stress of having to figure out where each box goes, you may label the boxes with their respective destination rooms. Write down, too, the serial numbers of all your electronic equipment.

Moving international means your stuff may join other people’s packages. Once everything you need is packed, take the effort of placing your name and destination address on each packing label so as to avoid losing your belongings.

Choosing an international mover

Choosing among hundreds of international movers is definitely the most critical part of moving. While you can search online for international moving services, it is best to ask your friends. Just be sure to interview at least 3 movers for comparison of prices and services. Ask each one to give you a free on-site estimate. Inquire about each mover’s insurance policy and verify with your local regulatory agency if their license is legitimate. You may also ask each mover for references to their customers since this is one way to be sure that they are capable of doing a great job.

Once you have chosen your mover, confirm with them the items to be shipped, services you need, packing date, loading date, delivery date and delivery time. Demand for a contract including the delivery details along with phone numbers and all costs. Also, some international movers give discounts to members of certain clubs and unions so double check if your organization is included.
Take your time in checking the inventory at both origin and destination before signing a document. This way you will be sure that nothing is damaged or missing.

Nobody said moving international is easy. Yet you can save yourself from possible frustrations by being well organized, prepared and, most importantly, wise in choosing the perfect mover.
