Video Inspection Systems: Where the Eye cannot go

Video inspection systems have found many uses in the industry. From piping systems, medical procedures to aircraft engines, a video inspection system allows us to see in places that are otherwise impossible to get inside.

THE BORESCOPE

The most important component of a video inspection system is called the borescope. A borescope is tube that has a camera on one end and a viewing system on the other. A borescope works pretty much like a telescope but is designed like a pipe or tube that can be inserted in small, tight, out-of-the-way spaces.

A borescope can either be flexible or rigid, depending on where it will be used. However, the rigid borescope usually generates better images than the flexible ones because the rigid construction protects the relay of images from the camera to the viewing system.

INSIDE THE HUMAN BODY

Video inspection systems are of particular value in the medical industry, particularly in the diagnosis and surgical field. The advent of video inspection systems and the invention of smaller, more powerful borescopes have allowed doctors to see inside a patient’s body and make accurate diagnoses without the need for invasive procedures.

Video inspection systems are also now being used in actual surgical processes. Borescopes are called endoscopes in medicine and they have long been used in excising tumors in the gastrointestinal tract and in the removal of gall and urinary stones.

Many types of medical instruments can be attached to the camera end of an endoscope that allows it to perform precise surgical procedures. The viewing system at the other end of the borescope enables the doctor to be totally in control of the entire operation.

Nowadays, video inspection systems are finding more sophisticated use as borescopes become smaller and more powerful. Who knows where the next generation of video inspection systems will take us. Let’s just wait and see.
