It’s not always easy to find a domain name available that suits your business, product or service. Many people and companies have registered not only the domain names they currently use, but also names that they think will be useful in the future. Some may be similar to yours.
Computers use a series of numbers in an Internet Protocol (IP) address to locate each other. Humans need a name easier to remember than numbers. If you’re an Internet user, a domain name makes it easy to find a web site. If you run an online business, your domain name helps customers find you.
You have to be imaginative in creating a domain name available for your business. It is advisable that you keep it short, hard to misspell and related to your business, product or service name. Remember, you must make it easy for your customers to find and remember your online address. People sometimes ask for your URL; that’s the same as a domain name.
To check if your preferred name is an available domain, you need to visit an accredited domain name registrar’s Web site. Most of the registrars offer a free search for available domain names. If it’s a domain not available, you can further search available domain names sold in domain auction web sites.
Of the top-level domains, .com reigns atop the others. You may want to have .com as the extension to your domain name, but when you run it through a search available domain inquiry you get domain not available results. You need not worry. Your preferred domain name with a .net, .biz, .org, or .info extensions may still be an available URL. If you find your preferred domain name available at these other top-level domains, by all means register it with them.
A Word of Caution
However, before you register a domain name available with an extension other than .com, you have to assess whether your customers can find your web site using the name and whether the company that registered the .com version has trademark rights over the name.
If it happens that your products are similar to that of the other company (which owns the .com version), and your customers use the .com extension, the customers will be pointed to that company’s website and they may end up purchasing from that company.
In case the other company has acquired trademark rights, you could be sued for trademark infringement. If these considerations are in the affirmative, you need to find a different domain name available for your business.
