THE SURGICAL CUTTER

If you have ever looked close at a silicon chip, you will notice very small, surgical cuts where signals and data are transferred from point to point. Have you ever wondered how those microscopic cuts with such level of precision and delicacy?

These cuts or scribes are made by a dicing machine.

A dicing machine is an industrial apparatus that is used by manufacturing companies to scribe computer chips and other very small electronic parts. This type of dicing machine is more specifically called wafer dicing machine.

A dicing machine can also be used to cut minerals such as sapphire, ruby, and other crystals to exacting specifications. Only a precision machine like dicing equipment can be used to handle these fragile materials and cut them into very small pieces to be used in many electronic devices.

SOPHISTICATED MACHINE

A dicing machine is a very expensive piece of machine because it makes use of sophisticated technology to enable the machine to handle very small and fragile materials and perform surgical scribes on their very thin surfaces. The dicing machine is hooked up to a computer where the specific cuts are designed and mapped out. Once the template is done, the cuts will then be traced by the dicing saws on the actual material. This computer-aided design allows the dicing machine to scribe with unparalleled accuracy.

There are two general types of dicing machines, the limited contact dicing machine and the normal dicing machine. The limited dicing machine is used for extremely thin and delicate materials that cannot support the weight of the dicing blades. These fragile materials will shatter when a certain level of force is applied.

Limited contact dicing machine is able to prevent the materials from shattering by employing an intelligent system that calculates how much force can be tolerated by the material. Depending on the material being cut, there is a type of dicing machine that uses laser to make the cuts.
