The K1 visa process involves the sponsorship of fiancés living in another country. The sponsorship allows fiancés to come and live in the country legally. It does not pertain to processing credit cards or payment processing.

The K1 visa process cannot begin with the fiancé applying for the visa with the immigration office, embassy or consulate overseas. A K1 visa must be applied for by a citizen, by approaching the local immigration department. The citizen must show financial stability to be eligible to petition a fiancé.

Once the K1 visa application is approved, the documents are sent to the local visa center for processing. It is then the job of the local visa center to send copies of the approved petition to the embassy overseas. The local embassy in turn sends the approval notice to the fiancé.

Before a K1 visa is issued, an individual needs to undergo a medical exam, and provide certain documentation. These documents include the passport, birth certificate, police clearance of the fiancé and any evidence of the relationship between the citizen and the fiancé. In addition, evidence of financial standing and completed application forms will also need to be provided to the embassy. People who were previously married will need to provide a certification of divorce. Proof must also be shown that both parties have been acquainted for a certain number of years

Once documents are ready for submission, an appointment is made by the fiancé(e) with the local embassy for an interview and document submission.

After the K1 visa is stamped on the applicant’s passport, the fiancé must enter the country within a certain time frame. Once entry has been made into the country, both parties must marry within a certain number of days. Failure to marry within a given time will deter the applicant or the citizen from applying for another K1 visa in the future.

The fiancé must apply for a change in immigration status to a permanent resident after marriage occurs. The K1 visa process allows the conversion of a permanent resident to a citizen after a certain period of continuously living in the country.
