A bed is the last bastion for any weary worker at the end of a busy day. But is that mattress you are using really safe and comfortable? Before you tuck yourself in, take a good look at your mattress and check: is it lumpy or does it conform your body’s shape? is it too soft or too hard? do you really get a good night’s rest on it or does your back ache in the morning?
Chances are you may be using traditional mattresses, which are made up of CFC foams, non-woven materials, formaldehyde glues, and, as required by law, may contain chemical flame retardants. Some mattresses also use pesticides to kill off mites and other small insects that may live in them.
If you think your mattress is giving you nightmares instead of pleasant dreams then it’s time for a change. A good alternative would be a futon. Better yet, why not change into organic futons?
Traditional futon parts originally used by the Japanese include a mattress stuffed with cotton batting and wrapped in sheets. Futons sold around the world have the same cotton batting at the core with additional organic cotton fabric as linings, which are all free of chemical and toxic paddings.
Organic futons are recommended by chiropractors to their patients because this type of mattress provides not just comfort but the ideal combination of support and resiliency. Futons are neither too soft, thereby providing adequate support, nor too firm, allowing your body to breathe and your blood to circulate even if you toss and turn at night.
Additional futon hardware, meanwhile, is not bulky or expensive. The mattress does not need a boxspring underneath it. Most futon can be laid out on the floor. Some manufacturers sell frames made from natural hardwood like oak that can fit into tight spaces. And the futon is so flexible that it can be used as a sofa bed or even as a work station.
So, before you settle down for your much-deserved rest, be doubly sure that you dream on organic futons rather than on toxic mattresses.
