Every business needs an identity, and every business satisfies this requirement through any number of media. Almost every business, for example, uses a company logo. Other businesses produce their own print advertisements, or commercials, or web sites. When it comes to word-of-mouth marketing, however, there is nothing more convenient than disseminating your own business cards to potential clients. With this in mind, it is important to have a card that lets you stand out from the rest of the pack.

While there are a number of professional designers out there that already make custom business cards (or other corporate cards), it is possible to make your own. What's more, you only have to keep a number of guidelines in mind in order to do this.

To start with, the stereotypical corporate cards are small, simple white rectangles of cardboard with a name and some contact information. In order to truly create custom business cards, then, you must change at least one aspect of this stereotype. Can you change the color of the text, for example? Can you place the text crosswise along the card instead of lengthwise? Can you add a small logo or picture to the card somewhere?

Eventually you will realize that any change that you make to the standard card stereotype will make your custom business cards more and more unique. You can change the background color of your card, for example - a black card with white text definitely implies a company that thinks out of the box. You can also experiment with placing your name and contact information in various different places around the card - just make sure that your clients will still be able to read it afterwards!

Before finalizing your changes, though, you must make certain that you look at the custom business cards you have designed. Although it is important to make your corporate cards unique, you must remember not to go too overboard on the design. Even though clients will notice a business card that stands out from the rest, they will not give any respect to a card that looks wild and garish.

In the end, you will find that, by making your own custom business cards, you will be able to learn exactly what kind of face you should present to clients. With a little trial and error, in fact, you will eventually find the most optimal design for your cards - and eventually the best way for them to attract new clients.
