Eye laser treatment is used to correct mild to moderate cases of nearsightedness or myopia, farsightedness or hyperopia, and astigmatism or distorted vision. These three eye disorders are collectively called refractive eye problems.

A number of surgical techniques to correct refractive eye problems are used today. The most popular procedure is refractive laser eye surgery which began to be offered in the United States in 1995 following the approval of the excimer laser by the Food and Drug Administration.

The excimer laser is used for two of the most commonly used laser eye surgery procedures today called photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), and laser in situ Keratomileusis (LASIK).

PRK removes very small amounts of tissue using the laser to give the cornea a gentle curve that makes it capable of focusing the light that passes through the eyes to meet at one point within the cornea. PRK only takes a few minutes to complete.

Boots laser eye surgery uses LASIK, a more complex procedure compared to PRK. A knife called a microkeratome is used to cut into the cornea then, a laser is used to remove tissue beneath it. The skill of the surgeon is important in performing boots laser eye surgery because an incision is involved in this procedure. While LASIK procedures, including boots laser eye surgery, lead to faster recovery time, some doctors do not recommend the procedure. In fact, some still advise their patients to undergo radial keratotomy, or RK, an eye surgery procedure that, similarly, smoothens the curve of the cornea by making incisions in a radial pattern without using an excimer laser.

Despite the advancements in laser eye surgery, not all patients who undergo laser eye treatments are completely free of spectacles or contact lenses after the procedure. There are recorded cases of patients who either continue to need glasses regularly or, need glasses occasionally such as when driving. Still, there are confirmed cases of patients who have poorer vision after undergoing laser eye surgery.
