Teleconferencing or conference calling may involve exchanges of data, audio, video, or all three formats amongst participants situated in geographically distant locations. When participating in a teleconference, parties must be informed of the title or subject of the meeting, call in number, and participant passcode.

When joining a teleconference, it is also a must to have a conference call phone which works more efficiently than the regular speaker phone. A conference call phone provides functions for switching calls, call forwarding, and call transfer. It also allows one participant to interrupt another teleconference participant at any time during the interaction.
Audio conference call phones that run on telephony PBX systems are capable of connecting to a teleconference bridge. A teleconference bridge is like a host that connects all conference call parties in a common channel.

Conference call phones have grown to become more and more sophisticated. More recent innovations include wireless phones, and echo and feedback reduction. Also available in the market are IP conference phones. An IP conference phone runs on VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) technology which uses broadband. A conference call running on VOIP is often capable of audio and video conferencing. However, IP conference calls are less preferred because VOIP channels are often publicly available and interpretable.

Today’s latest telecommunications innovations make mobile video conferencing possible with the growing use of 3G (that is, third generation) mobile networks and wireless broadband. These networks provide real-time video streaming on mobile phones, personal digital assistants, laptops, and notebooks.

By the start of 2006, manufacturers have come up with Bluetooth-enabled conference call phones that are compatible with wireless and mobile phones. These features enable the conference call phone unit to be moved or transferred from one room to just about any other place. These gadgets are known for their high speech quality for which, they are becoming more popular both for portability and efficiency.
