Scooter insurance or motorcycle insurance refers to the insurance policy bought for two-wheeled vehicles running on a mechanical engine. If there are three wheels but two of them are found on the same axle, this can still be eligible for the same kind of insurance.

There are three common types of scooter insurance. First is the insurance that is for third parties only, wherein the insurance company will cover the costs of repairing any property that you have damaged in an accident or covering medical expenses related to injuries that resulted from an accident. If your scooter is damaged in the process, this type of insurance will not cover expenses related to fixing it.

The second type of scooter insurance takes the same third party coverage and includes additional coverage if the scooter that you are using becomes destroyed in a fire or stolen. Finally, the third and most expensive type of motor scooter insurance is the comprehensive plan. This includes all the stipulations in the first two types plus the repairs of your own motorcycle or scooter in an accident.

If you are working on a budget, you can choose to pay as you go, instead of purchasing a year’s worth of insurance as is the customary procedure. Under the pay as you go scheme, you get to decide how long you want to keep the insurance plan and pay only smaller monthly installments instead of a huge yearly premium.

Keep in mind that you can still negotiate with the insurance company for additional stipulations in your plan. Some companies will also spring for legal expenses incurred from accidents, while some also require you to pay additional fees if you plan on traveling with your scooter outside the country. At the same time, if you are planning to make any major alterations to your scooter, you also need to inform the insurance company of these changes.
