Verizon is in the midst of deploying its fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network all over its footprint in the country. This footprint covers twenty-eight states, and as of the end of 2006, Verizon has completed FTTP deployment in sixteen states. With a complete fiber optic network from the plant to the house or premises, Verizon internet access has increased tremendously, especially in comparison to traditional internet dialup access.
Without FTTP in place, your Verizon internet access would be limited to its digital subscriber lines (DSL), similar to Bellsouth fast access DSL technology. With this technology, you would get fast speeds downstream of about 1.5 Mbps, which is still twenty times faster than the 56 kbps on ordinary internet dialup access. To a limited extent, you can watch some video programming with these speeds. However, your upstream speeds will still be slow and you won't be able to go into bandwidth-intensive applications like interactive gaming and interactive video.
As these two major telephone companies faced competition from cable companies offering telephony services through VoIP, they adopted different strategies. Bellsouth has decided to deploy fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) only and use asymmetric digital subscriber lines (ADSL) to reach the individual subscribers' homes. This Bellsouth fast access DSL network can, to a limited extent, also offer video programming as competition to cable.
Verizon embarked on a massive FTTP deployment instead. With FTTP, Verizon internet access can give you much faster speeds: close to 30 Mbps downstream (or faster), which would again be twenty times faster than DSL broadband speeds; and, more importantly, at least 10 Mbps (or even faster) upstream speeds, which will really expand your broadband experience.
Verizon internet access on its fiber optic service infrastructure enables you to enjoy bandwidth-heavy Internet applications. In addition, the infrastructure also enables Verizon to offer you more television and video programming, in direct competition with cable companies.
