Time card machines being used by companies to track their employees time has come a long way in just a few years. A few years ago, time card machines are antiquated pieces of equipment where you punch your time card. Nowadays, time card machines are electronic and automated. The employee’s time card is now undeniably more sophisticated.

Time clock machines in all major companies take the form of a time entry system. This type of system can range from the simplest program to the most sophisticated that caters to thousands of employees.

The simplest type of time entry software is the standalone version. Standalone time entry software can only run on one computer with no networking or sharing capabilities. A step above the standalone time entry software is a time entry system that can be shared by multiple people over a network. Data between computers are the same.

The most sophisticated kind of time entry software is the one with client/server capability. This version of the software can accommodate hundreds of users who enter their data several times over the network. Timesheet configuration per user is not possible as all security and network configurations are done through the server and not the client. This means an employee can enter his data into the software, but he cannot edit or erase it as he pleases. All changes in the data and configuration should be done through the server.

Time entry software can also be installed in handhelds and digital assistants. However, the purpose of these types of software is to transfer data from handhelds to the main repository.

Unlike the old time card machine, you can regulate security by using time entry software. You can assign a password to each of your employees to use when entering their data. You can also configure your software so that data entered cannot be modified or erased without approval from a supervisor.
