It seems as if you can register a domain name anywhere these days. You can register one or twenty or even a hundred with a just few clicks of your mouse through any domain name registrars available on the internet. Even the most inexperienced user can register a domain. Almost anyone now can own a domain name in a couple of minutes and have a website hosted and running within just a couple of days. Unfortunately, what you might not realize is that this seemingly innocuous purchase might be useless after a certain period of time without proper care and attention.
First, familiarize yourself with the terminology. The most important of which is domain name registrar. This is the company where you originally purchased your domain name. This is also the company you pay to renew your domain name when your registration expires. However, domain names can be transferred from one registrar to another. There are a number of registrars out there who send out solicitation letters that look like renewal notices. The key is to know who your original domain name registrar is and to keep records of any information pertaining to your domain name.
Whois information. This is the basic information returned by what we call a whois query. It contains registrant, ownership and registrar information of the domain name. Most domain name registrars have whois functionality on their respective websites and you can view information about all domains from all registrars.
From a legal standpoint, the most important information you fill in the form in your registrar’s website is the Registrant or Owner contact information. You should always make sure that you are the one listed in this field even if you had a website designer or developer purchase the domain for you.
Then there’s the Administrative, Billing and Technical contact. You can assign yourself as all three but you have to remember the specific purpose of each contact. The administrative handles all information regarding the ownership of the domain. The domain name registrars send the renewal notices, password changes to this contact. Billing contact is in charge of billing matters while a technical contact will be the one in charge of maintaining your website.
Just remember to treat the purchase of your domain name from any domain registrars as any other business transaction. Keep updated records and be careful who you give access to.
