Top executive MBA programs are not for everyone. You need to decide before enrolling in a MBA program and ask yourself what your motivations for getting this education are and how it will be able to help your existing career. There are three kinds of MBA programs with top tier ones referring to Ivy League programs, second tier ones at state universities and third tier ones at local colleges or online universities.
Top executive MBA programs are best suited for those who already have existing careers in investment banking, strategic consulting and marketing for consumer products. Keep in mind that top executive MBA programs require deep-seated commitment and months of intensive studying. While most schools use the same books and learning materials for a MBA, the name and prestige of your school is important when you apply to Fortune 500 companies.
The GMAT or Graduate Management Admissions Test is often a prerequisite to enter MBA programs but the weight of your score in the admissions process varies from one school to another. You will need to be in the top three to five percent to enter a top tier school, but for second and third tier schools, the GMAT is just a formality. It usually takes a few months of reviewing for the GMAT before you are ready, but if you do not get a good score on your first try, you can always take it again.
When applying to these executive programs, choose around four schools. Feel free to apply to a dream school, but choose a backup school that you are sure to get into as well. Although you may get into your backup school, you need to weigh your options and decide if deferring studying so that you can apply again the next school year is the better option for you. However, with all things considered, a MBA is not a necessity if you want to learn and practice business.
