Background of Reading and Leeds Festivals

Officially known as the Carling Weekend Festivals, the Reading and Leeds Festivals started in the UK back in 1960. Part of the Reading and Leeds Festivals' tradition is to feature rock bands from UK and other parts of the world. The music festival is held simultaneously in two areas of the UK - Reading and Leeds - and usually during the August bank holiday weekend.

Originally, the festivals featured folk-oriented music but gradually concentrated on punk, alternative and metal types of rock as response to the ever-changing tastes of patrons. While the main stage features the major acts of established and already famous bands, there are also other stages and areas of the festival which show the emerging or less known acts. In addition, the festivals also feature non-rock music numbers such as comedy, cabaret or dance.

The festival sites also have facilities for guests and spectators to park and camp out during the three-day event.

As in the past years, the Reading and Leeds Festival 2006 featured at least six very popular bands, and the performances of the lesser-known ones were remarkable as well.

Tips for Festival Visitors

If you are planning to attend the next Reading and Leeds Festival, you might want to bring adequate provisions, like clothing supply that will last you at least three days, toiletries and camping gear.

Arrive early so that you can choose where to park and set up your camp. It is also best not to park or set up near a toilet facility, because of the tendency of other people to crowd around these areas. Restaurants around the area are also expensive, so you should either bring your own food supply or go farther from the area to buy food.

Plan on spending a lot of time outdoors in the hot sun so use sunscreen and protective clothing.

Buy your festival tickets only from official ticket outlets, and buy them as early as possible.
