Different Types of Internet Services

The average household or business today can no longer do without an Internet access. Depending on your preferences and budget, you can choose from several types of Internet Service Providers or ISPs.

The dial-up was the earliest and simplest form of ISP, where you can use any telephone or cell phone to access the Internet from any place. Hence it is a great advantage to mobile Internet users. On the other hand, the telephone line you're using is blocked from incoming and outgoing calls if you're online. Dial-up also depends on the quality of your phone connection which is highly vulnerable to adverse weather conditions. Dial-up also has limited transmittal speed up to only 56 kilobytes per second. Though dial-up service is cheapest, you're not exempt from additional toll charges for phone use. Because of its limited speed and capacity, dial-up cannot support some online gaming or videoconferencing activities.

If you need the Internet for activities other than just browsing or e-mail, your best bet is to get service from high speed Internet service providers. Also called broadband Internet access, high speed Internet services come in different forms - DSL, cable, and wireless.

Types of High Speed Internet Service Providers

The digital subscriber line or DSL was developed as an enhancement of the dial-up connection. While DSL also uses telephone lines, it also allows you to use your phone for fax or conversation, even while you're online. And because it uses a larger bandwidth, DSL also gives you the high speed internet access you need for online gaming or videos.

Another type is the cable high speed Internet, which uses your cable TV connection by installing a cable modem and a coaxial cable to enable several users to access Internet at the same time. Like DSL, high speed cable internet usage does not take away cable TV or phone airtime. Cable internet also claims to be faster than DSL service.

A main drawback to DSL or high speed cable Internet is that they may not be available in certain areas. Both systems use a special type of cable which is normally available only if there is a large volume of users. So DSL or cable internet may not be good options for those who live in remote areas.

The wireless network Internet, also called WiFi, addresses this inavailability problem. The WiFi provider installs a special antenna or dish on your rooftop and it will receive and transmit signals from a wireless network the same way our cellphone does.

Choosing from Various High Speed Internet Service Providers

Before subscribing to an ISP, you need to consider the costs and efficiency or quality of service. Just as it is important to have excellent Internet connection, ISPs should also provide you with reliable and prompt technical support in case of service problems.
