Growing Popularity of Climbing

Rock and wall climbing has become a popular component of challenge courses in summer camps and recreational parks. However, this activity can be very risky. Most people who try rock or wall climbing are generally very inexperienced, so it is imperative to have facilitators at the site who are properly equipped to teach and guide users the correct procedures. Just as dog trainers need dog training certification, a ropes course certification shows proof of completing adequate training in facilitating climbing.

Training for Ropes Course Certification

If you want to be a ropes course facilitator or operator, you need to complete training and earn your ropes course certification.

Typical training duration is about 24 hours for low-rope facilitation and another 24 hours for high-rope or challenge climbing. If you want, you can also take additional training hours for rope safety and rescue, and for ropes management.

Training topics include belaying, rope knots, course operation, course design, protocol and maintenance. You also get training in leadership and facilitation skills which are most essential to proper and safe operation of rock or wall climbing. In fact, supervision is a major area of training, and you need to continually renew this skill even after completion of training.

After completing the course, you take a certification exam to earn your ropes course certification. In case you don't meet the passing mark, you will take remedial training courses. You need to pass the exam to earn your certification.

But training and certification do not end here. Every time you renew your certification, you need to take continuing education in special topics such as rescue, nonstandard practices, protocols and facilitation of groups. And if you're an operator, you may also be interested in staff development courses. Hours of instruction for each topic may vary.

Where to Get Training and Certification

There are various reputable training centers to take ropes course. The center will also administer the exams as well as process your certification. Training costs about seven to eight hundred dollars for groups of eight to ten people. Some meals are provided, but you will need to pay for your own transportation and living expenses.
