Direct broadcast satellite (DBS) has been a digitally based technology since its inception over a decade ago. Utilizing communication satellites, DBS technology transmits a variety of programming to a network of small reception dishes. There are two companies in the US that use DBS to provide HD satellite TV to millions of subscribers.

You get all-digital broadcasts from satellite television providers, but not all broadcasts come in HD satellite TV format. You are familiar with the analog TV technology, whose 525-line transmission is known as standard definition. This can be transmitted in analog or digital mode. However, a higher definition (HD) transmission is possible only in the digital television (DTV) mode.

Several cable networks have special HD channels that broadcast HD programming. HD satellite TV providers may also transmit commercial-free, digital stereo music similar to compact discs. To receive HD satellite TV broadcasts, your system must include a triple LNB (low noise blocker) satellite dish, an HD satellite TV receiver or descrambler box, such as Directtv HD receivers, and an HDTV projector or television set, like DTV receivers. If you have the proper audio system you can also listen to programs in digital surround sound.

While the satellite television industry has been in a technologically strong position to provide national distribution of HD programming, it has limited satellite capacity to supply channels for local HD satellite TV programs. This limitation is the reason for their initial reluctance to carry local HD programming. Plans to expand satellite capacity are underway.

HD satellite TV service meets consumer demand for entertainment programming, Internet connectivity, and multimedia applications. With HD satellite TV service and associated equipment, such as DirecTV HD satellite and DirectTV HD receivers, consumers not only enjoy more programming choices but also can get video on demand, interactive TV, and even personalized on-demand stock quotes.
