More and more mothers are availing of cord blood services as the knowledge of the medical importance of cord blood becomes more widespread.

Because some hospitals are not yet properly equipped and trained to render cord blood services such as cord blood harvesting, donation and storage, it is best that you inform a nearby cord blood bank of your intentions so the cord blood bank can make the advance preparations.

FIRST AND CRUCIAL STEP

The first and most important aspect of cord blood services is the cord blood harvest. While cord blood stores well and keeps it patency for a long time, there is a very small window of opportunity to properly collect the cord blood. After birth, the blood in the baby’s severed umbilical cord will only be viable for some minutes after which the stem cells begin to die and the blood can no longer be harvested.

This is why it is important to decide and inform a cord blood bank ahead of time if you want to avail of cord blood services. If you decide this during labor, the hospital may not have the tools and know-how to provide cord blood services. Moreover by then it may be too late for the cord blood bank to do anything because too much time has already elapsed for the blood to still be viable.

BANK OR GIVE AWAY

The second part of cord blood services is the cord donation or banking as the case may be. After harvest, the cord blood bank will perform the necessary documentation and then freeze the cord blood until it is needed.

Cord blood services may be free or not depending if you are donating the blood or banking it for your family’s future use. If you are going to donate the blood, the cord blood bank will not charge you for anything. Once the donation is finalized, the cord blood bank will find the proper patient for your baby’s life-saving stem cells.
