When you want to watch TV programs through DirecTV HD satellite transmissions, you'll need two critically important components: a DirectTV HD receiver and a DirecTV dual LNB (including the satellite dish assembly).

Your direct link to the DirecTV satellite is the dish, which receives the satellite signals. Being a parabolic reflector, the dish serves as the first step in amplifying the satellite feed. From the dish, the signals go to the DirecTV dual LNB's front part called the feed horn.

The DirecTV satellite broadcasts each channel on a specific transponder. One thing you should know is that the transponder signals have a circular polarity: odd-numbered channels go in one direction, while even-numbered channels go the opposite way. Each LNB found on the satellite dish tunes in to either even- or odd-numbered channels only. A single LNB cannot do both. This is the reason you need two LNBs, so you can get all channels at the same time.

Your dish gets very high frequency gigahertz signals from the DirecTV satellite; your LNB (or low noise block) amplifies and down-converts the signals to lower megahertz frequencies to feed to your HD satellite receiver. Your DirectTV HD receiver will automatically change polarities the moment you switch channels. When you select a channel for watching, the receiver instructs the LNB to tune either to the odd-numbered transponder or the even-numbered one.

Your DirecTV dual LNB must contend with two factors to produce the best quality video and audio signals. One factor is amplification (or gain), the other is noise temperature. Heavy rains can reduce signal reception, so a bigger dish can help increase gain. However, high amplification is useless unless you have a very low noise temperature.

The DirecTV dual LNB also enables you to connect two receivers. This way, you can watch the financial news while your children watch a different show.
