IV sedation dentistry is the process of administering sedation medication intravenously to dental patients. A needle contained in a plastic tube is inserted within the vein of the patient’s arm or the back of your hand. The medication is inserted into this tube, and the patient immediately feels its effects. Once dental sedation is administered the patient is placed in a relaxed, but conscious state. Most patients feel drowsy, and no pain is felt while the surgical procedure is performed inside your mouth. In other forms of dental sedation, patients are also put to sleep using another type of medication.

IV sedation dentistry is ideal for patients who have a fear of being treated by dentists. Dental sedation is also well suited for people who have sensitive teeth, have difficulties in getting numb, and have a sensitive gag reflex.

If you are a candidate for IV sedation dentistry, you will be advised not to drink or eat anything prior to midnight, the day before your surgery. Any medications that need to be taken prior to your surgery must only be taken with a small amount of water. Your dentist will allow no other forms of liquid. It is strongly recommended that you have someone accompany you on the day of the surgery. It is even better if your companion stays with you throughout the surgical procedure.

If an operation requiring dental sedation is required ensure that the dentist has the proper license or certification to administer the medication. Sedation dentists must attend a number of years of formal education, be certified by the dental board and have complete equipment to perform IV sedation dentistry.

You should also note that the medications that are administered for dental sedation have some side effects. It is best that you discuss these matters with your dentist before proceeding with the surgery.

In the event that IV sedation dentistry cannot be administered to you, there are other forms of dental sedation such as oral or gas sedation that are available as alternative options.
