Your car's regular insurance policy may not cover some situations like a temporary driver, a temporary-use vehicle such as a leased car, or driving your vehicle in another country. In such cases, you will need a short term car insurance.

Terms of Coverage

Although "short term" usually means "less than a year", to car insurance companies it means "less than a month." Most short term car insurance policies range from 1 to 28 days, and the premium is on a daily rate basis. The car insurance company usually charges a higher rate during the first few days, then a lower rate afterwards.

You can elect partial or comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive coverage is similar to that of a regular term car insurance and covers death, injury, loss, damage, theft, and repair service with accredited shops. You can also get additional cover for driving the car across the border. If you're in the UK for instance, you can buy additional cover for driving your car in any country that is a member of the European Union.

In the event of an accident, you might need to make a copayment or excess in certain cases which the insurer stipulates.

Eligibility and Exclusions

You must be a resident of the country where you are buying insurance, be at least 21 years of age, and possess a driving license that has been in force for at least a year. You must not have been disqualified from driving during the past 3 years. There are also restrictions regarding purposes of using your car.

Your vehicle should be registered under the country you are buying the insurance from. It must have a minimum market value and some insurers require that it must not be imported or modified, nor used for hire or racing purposes.

Tips for Getting Short Term Car Insurance

While there are numerous online insurers available, you also need to shop around to get the best terms for your money. You can buy insurance up to a month in advance. Coverage commences immediately once you have completed the data and paid the premium with your credit card.

More than car insurance price, you should also check the insurer's general reputation through insurance authorities, online sources or by asking trusted parties.
