Until recently, a man who failed to have an erection has been described as impotent. This term, however, is inaccurate and has negative connotations. Nowadays, therefore, the more appropriate term is erectile disfunction.
What is erectile dysfunction?
Erectile disfunction is the inability to achieve or sustain an erection firm enough for intercourse. Erectile function is dependent on the penis receiving a full dose of blood. An inadequate production of nitric oxide will not let the blood vessels in the penis fill up with blood, resulting in anything from an impaired erection to complete impotence.
Causes of Erectile Disfunction
Erectile disfunction is usually due to inadequate blood volume filling up the spongy penile tissues. A non-erect penis contains about eight cubic centimeters of blood; a fully erect penis should have sixty-two cubic centimeters of blood.
Any process that restricts blood flow to the penis or does not keep the blood within the penis will result in erectile problems. The top cause of erectile disfunction is cardiovascular disease. Blockages in arteries are the worst culprit, and these can generally be traced back to high cholesterol levels, smoking, or high blood pressure.
Diabetes and erectile dysfunction are very closely linked. Aside from the blood flow problems diabetes can also damage the nerves necessary for firm erections. Diabetic men should keep their blood-sugar levels as normal as possible to minimize erectile problems.
Surgery or traumatic accidents to the pelvis can cause erectile disfunction. It can also be caused as side effect of a medication or can be related to depression or other psychological problems.
Erectile Dysfunction Help
Men with erectile disfunction due to a hormone disorder need appropriate erectile dysfunction medication. This may start with hormone replacement, followed by nitric oxide enhancers, and subsequently by dopamine stimulants. Nitric oxide enhancers are also effective when the cause of erectile disfunction is unknown.
