If you want to take an Alaska cruise, you'll have to plan for it well ahead. The Alaska cruise season is short, from May to September, so you have to arrange your calendar to fit in the cruise.

You will find an Alaska cruise worth all the preparation. You'll get plenty of dramatic wilderness scenery, invigorating clean air, wildlife, and fascinating shore excursions. You usually have two options on the most popular cruise routes:

• The Inside Passage Route from Vancouver to Skagway, including visits to tidewater glaciers such as in Glacier Bay; and,
• The Glacier Route, which includes the Gulf of Alaska, during a one-way cruise between Vancouver and Whittier.

To cruise in Glacier Bay, Alaskan cruise lines need special entry permits, which are issued on limited basis during the prime season in order to protect the environment. These permits are spread around, but your best bet will be either Princess Cruise Alaska or its sister line, Holland America Alaska cruises.

Princess Cruise Alaska and Holland America Alaska cruises receive the greatest number of permits, since both are deemed historical cruise lines, being Alaska cruise pioneers. If you choose Princess Cruise Alaska, they'll give you the freedom to choose your own personal vacation experience aboard the ship. This means that you select which facilities and amenities onboard you will want to experience.

Princess Cruise Alaska can also arrange for you to take its cruise plus land tour experience. This may be one of the best ways to see more of Alaska. This combines a 7-day cruise between Vancouver and Whittier with a four- to ten-day tour of the Alaskan interior via luxury train and overnight stays at Princess wilderness lodges. During the cruise portion, you'll pass by Glacier Bay and Prince William Sound; during the land tour, you'll spend at least two nights at Denali National Park.
