In a society where litigation is the usual way of settling and resolving disputes, it is not surprising that there are many lawyers out there who are willing to take on your case.

THE HIGH COST OF JUSTICE

If you are involved in any form of dispute and taking the case to court is your only resort, know that litigation can be emotionally and financially draining. The truth is lawsuits are never easy whether you are on the defendant or the plaintiff’s side.

The main consideration when lawsuits are involved would have to be the costs that you have to shoulder. A main chunk of these costs will go to the solicitor fee. Normally, a solicitor fee is computed on an hourly basis, and is based on the total number of hours a lawyer spends on your case. The solicitor fee or lawyer’s fee does not include the costs of filing documents and other court fees. These things are a separate expense that you will shoulder as well.

A solicitor fee will depend largely on the lawyer’s reputation and expertise on the matter. Of course if you are intent on winning the case, you will prefer a lawyer who has had a history of winning similar cases. In most cases, the solicitor fee for these lawyers is higher.

THE CONTINGENCY FEE

There is another type of solicitor fee usually seen in personal injury and product liability cases. This type of solicitor fee is called a contingency fee, or a no win no fee arrangement. Under a no win no fee arrangement, your lawyer will take your case without charging you any solicitor fee in exchange for a percentage of the money that the court or a settlement awards you. This “no win no fee” plan does not work for criminal or domestic cases.

When approaching a lawyer, the best tactic is to be upfront about your case and how much you can afford to spend on it. Most lawyers will be more than willing to help you if your case deserves it.
