Gender selection is a choice bound by culture. Even in the ancient times, the basis for gender selection is culture. Economy is also involved in gender selection. Males are preferred because they were thought to be physically stronger and thus, could help out in the working field. Only humans are capable of gender selection.

In China, there is a one child policy. The Chinese gender selection is also indicative of the status of China’s economy. Because of their huge number of population, each family is required to have one child only. To have more than one child would mean that the parents would have to pay more taxes for the second or following child.

Thus, some parents would choose baby gender because it is the common practice people have experienced throughout history. In gender selection, males are given more priority.

Males were believed to be more capable of protecting their families during times of war. In choosing soldiers to fight in war, women and children are left behind while men are selected regardless of their responsibilities at home and to their family.

In royal families, males are favored in gender selection. They were the ones to carry on the throne of the royal family.

These examples are gender selection made by choice.

However, the world is changing. The modern world is taking on the challenge of gender selection by artificially choosing gender using modern science.

Scientists and doctors manipulate and select gender or choose baby gender by looking at the parents’ chromosomes. All humans carry 46 pairs of chromosomes. Of all these pairs, 23 are reproductive chromosomes. These are called gametes. The gametes are the sperm and egg cells.

Gender selection is done when the X and Y chromosomes are combined to develop a male. A female is formed by combining two X chromosomes.
