Borescopes are small instruments that are used to look inside areas that cannot be reached for inspection. It is similar to an endoscope which used to view internal body organs. In contrast, borescopes are used to look inside engines, fuel injectors, behind walls, machine metal parts, rifle barrels, in duct work, castings, valves, in heat exchangers, manifolds, pipes, fuel nozzles, valves, piston crowns and many more.

All borescopes are composed of a tube with an eye piece that magnifies the area to be viewed, an objective lens, which shows the image of the area to be inspected and an optical relay which transmits the images from the objective lens to the eye piece.

There are three different types of borescopes, whose only difference lies on the kind of optical relay used:

Rigid borescopes produce better quality imaging than a flexible borescope; however, they can only be used when viewing at a straight line and with no obstructions. Rigid borescopes can allow a 360-degree view of its surroundings and cost less than a flexible borescope.

Semi-rigid borescopes are similar to a rigid borescope except that it uses fiber optic image bundles to transmit the image of the area requiring borescope inspection. They are best utilized in frequent and harsh borescope inspections.

A flexible borescope also makes use of fiber optic bundles to produce the image area. The quality of images that are produced will depend on the fiber composition and the number of fibers it is made of. A flexible borescope is best used in areas that have obstructions and curves.

Hawkeye borescopes is one of the leading companies in the market that has a variety of borescopes that can be used for different applications or purposes. The company can even produce custom made borescopes for you, arrange for the delivery and offer you a competitive price for it.

Borescopes can be bought through aviation, shooting and industrial suppliers, stores that sell safes and vaults, optical supply stores and home inspection companies.

In purchasing borescopes, one should not only consider the price of the instrument, but also take a look at its durability, flexibility, quality and ease of repair.
