Overnight services with beds within the train are also provided so you can spend more time in touring parts of Italy and Europe during the day.

The purchase of an Italy rail pass allows you to visit parts of Italy and some parts of Europe using one ticket, and allows you to take the train at anytime and any place without having to line up in each city that you visit making it one of the easiest ways to travel.

Trenitalia is the train network in Italy that tourist utilizes to travel around Italy. An Italy rail pass under this train network will allow you to travel for 4 days within a period of two months. Additional fees can be paid for an extension of 6 days validity within the same two-month period. There are fares for students and adults, and for first and second-class travel. They also have special fares for group travel of 2 people or more. Special fares are also available for disabled people.

It is strongly recommended that advance seat reservations be made to avoid disappointment in non-availability of seats. Italy train system schedules are available on the Internet or train station itself.

How Does an Italy rail pass work?

On the first city of departure, at the train station, and before boarding the train, look for a railway official (not the conductor) to have your ticket validated. The official will enter the validity period of your ticket (first and last date you are permitted to use the ticket). Only the official is authorized to write on your ticket. Making other marks on your ticket may invalidate your rail pass. Your rail pass should be validated within 6 months of purchase.

As you travel from city to city, there is no need to have your ticket revalidated. The conductor may however be asked to present your ticket for inspection.

For tourists, it is strongly recommended that they bring their passports. Oftentimes, immigration officials board the trains at stopovers; make ticket inspections and request to see your passport to view visa validity. You should ascertain that prior to your travel, your visa to the city you wish to visit, is valid.

If you want to see more parts of Europe, you can purchase tickets for the Eurail. The Eurail train schedules are made available on the internet as well as the cities it serves. Tickets can also be purchased on the website and can be used for travel to 18 different European cities with flexible travel periods of 15 and 21 days, and 1-3 months giving you flexibility. Fares also range from adult to student and group travel. The tickets work in the same manner as an Italy rail pass.
