It is normal to feel depressed from time to time. However, if the condition becomes prolonged and already interferes with your ability to do normal tasks, you may already be suffering from clinical depression.

Anti depression medications are advisable only for those with a serious case of depression. Depression medications are not stimulants or uppers, but they take away the symptoms of depression.

There are several causes of depression and it can range from mild to severe. A physician should first determine the cause and degree of the problem before prescribing anti depression medications.

Depression may at times be caused by anxiety disorders. In cases like this, anti anxiety medications are sometimes more appropriately prescribed instead of anti-depression. Medications for anxiety help ease symptoms like panic attacks, chest pains, breathing problems, dizziness, nausea, and even phobias.

Depression medications don’t work immediately. It usually takes 1 to 3 weeks before improvements begin to show. Also, symptoms do not dissipate at the same time. Some symptoms disappear earlier than other symptoms.

One of the most common symptoms of depression is delusion. Sleeping and eating problems together with depleted energy levels are also signs of depression.
There is no certain way to see if anti depression medications will work.

Doctors usually prescribe one drug after another until an effective medication is found. Normally, depression medication is done for several months on average. Some cases however require medication to continue for years indefinitely.

Tricyclic antidepressants are commonly used for cases of major depression, while monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIS) are usually prescribed for depression caused by anxiety disorders. Every depression medication is expected to have its own unwanted side effects as well as its level of effectiveness.

A number of new anti depressants have been introduced in the past years. Some of these new anti depression medications affect the neurotransmitters of the brain and seem to have less bothersome side effects.
