Heartburn is a burning sensation that is generally felt in the chest area. Because of the location of the pain, it is often mistaken for a heart attack. Heartburn occurs when a certain amount of stomach acid flows back into the esophagus (the passageway between your mouth and stomach) causing it to react, and become inflamed. Most people experience some pain, notice a bitter or acidic aftertaste at the back of their mouth, feel nauseous, bloated and sometimes have the urge to vomit.

Consuming beverages that contain caffeine, alcohol, or are carbonated, eating chocolates, citrus fruits, tomatoes, spicy and fatty foods, raw onions, garlic and black pepper can help trigger heartburn.

You also have a chance of getting heartburn if you lie down a couple hours after you eat, smoke, are overweight, wear fitted clothes or belts around your waist, have a busy lifestyle or are pregnant.

There are certain strategies that one can follow to get rid of heartburn. Taking medication is the most common way to get rid of heartburn. Antacids (which can cause constipation or diarrhea), alginic acid, or sodium alginate can neutralize your condition. Bismuth subsalicylate can coat your esophagus and protect it from stomach acids; H2 blockers, or histamine receptor antagonists can stop the production of stomach acid. You should avoid taking aspirin or ibuprofen, as it can make your condition even worst.

A number of natural cures for heartburn exist: consuming figs, fresh pineapple and papaya, drinking peppermint capsules or several cups of peppermint tea can prevent heartburn gas from forming in your esophagus, drinking aloe vera juice relieves your stomach and digestive area, chamomile tea soothes your digestive system and sucking on hard candy produces saliva which reacts against stomach acid.

Heartburn can also be prevented even before it occurs. Consuming food that is high in protein and low in fat, drinking distilled water mixed with a couple of teaspoons of raw honey and apple cider vinegar before meals can help promote digestion, eating and drinking more than two hours before going to bed, avoiding tight clothing around your waist, losing weight if you are overweight, eating slowly, eating less at night and increasing the height of the head of your bed can help prevent acid from going up to your esophagus area.

Above are only some remedies to get rid of heartburn, and ways to prevent it.

You should obtain heartburn help if you experience heartburn more than several times a week. Heartburn can be a symptom of an underlying condition that can lead to esophagitis, a condition that causes you to have difficulty in swallowing and experience some bleeding.

Immediate medical help should be sought if you vomit blood, have stools that contain blood or are black in color, you experience pain radiating from your neck to your shoulder, you sweat while you experience the pain in your chest, or have difficulty in breathing.
